telephone conversation of 20 min. with Mr. Fletcher,

473

It would be strange for an habitual drunkard to neglect the opportunities of the holiday for getting intoxicated,

Thomson asked Mr. Bowen-Rowlands if he had any objection to state the circumstanses under which he got drunk on this occasion, I went out for it.

Mr. Thomson. Was your mind in such a state that you could not

resist the temptation?

The attacks come on suddenly, I fight against them.

The attacks do not last more than two days. My work never suffers, Then I got married in 1909 I put a check on myself and I have had great success. The attacks would last six weeks, during which I would be neither drunk nor sober. If I had not put a check on my❤ -self the attacks would not have been apparent. If it is not a

disease I ought to be in the Lumatic Asylum, after the warnings that I have received. When the attacks come on I am absolutely

unable to resist them,

On the 9th. I came back and did my work. The reason why I broke

on the 6th, was that I was so disgusted to hear that the M.0.B.

had reported me to the H. 8. D.

Calls:-

A.G.M.Fletcher, C.S.

I have known Mr. Bowen-Rowlands very well indeed for 11

years. Before my marriage I saw a good deal of him. I frequently

dined with him. We have lived together on more than one occasion.

He used to have very great temptation to drink. Afterwards he tri-

-ed to check it,, md he had long periods of abstention. That was

about 8 or 9 years ago.i.e. It was about 8 or 9 years ago that he

began to abstain. In the old days, before the periods of abstinence

I used never to see him drunk. I do not think that it made him

drunk then. I used to think that it would have been better for him

to drink regularly in moderation, rather than abstain totally. It

is a difficult medical question. I believe that he is quite unable

to withstand the attack when it ☛ comes on,
